writeoutLoud lesson

2015-2016 observation Self Editing with Writeout Loud Partridge Goals: 1. Students will be able to use Write Outloud technology of text-to-talk to help them edit their own writing. Even using the Microsoft spell checker and grammar checker it is possible to have the computer make correction choices that do not match their actual intent. Materials: 1. Computer lab and computers 2. Smartboard 3. Write Outloud program 4. Pencil 5. Headphones 6. student text to be edited 7. Write Outloud access and use sheet (one per student) 8. vocabulary sheet 9. sample text for group edit Anticipatory Set 7:30-7:37 0. As students enter A. Plug in headphones but don't put them on. 1. Essential question on Smartboard- How can I use technology to improve my writing? My goal for today is that by the end of the period you all will be able to use Write Outloud to improve your writing. 2. Preview the vocabulary: grammar, punctuation, capitalization, homonyms, control c, control v- We need to have a common vocabulary to discuss editing and Write: OutLoud. 3. Proper editing of your written work is very important for your future. After graduation from OHS or college, having a properly edited resume could be the difference between being hired for a job or being out of work. Properly edited writings can be the difference between keeping a job and getting fired. 4. There will be times when you need to edit but there is no one, no friends, no family, available to proofread your work. But it can be hard for some people to see their own mistakes through reading alone. Since you made the mistake the first time you might not be able to see it the 2nd time. 5. Computer spellcheckers and grammar checkers can't necessarily fix every mistake you make. Computer editors don't know your intent so they might suggest a correction that doesn't fit what you really meant to say. 6. Write: Outloud is a text-to-speech program. This will turn your essay into an audiobook. It will allow you to look at your work with new eyes. Write: Outloud works best when used after using Microsoft word. Direct Instruction: 7:37-7:43 7. Demonstrate usage of Write: OutLoud- I am going to walk you through the steps using Write Outloud. Then we will do some sample editing. 8. Steps for using Write Outloud on your hand out. 9. Find Write Outloud under student programs. 10. Click on Write Outloud. 11. Paste your rough copy with control v 12. Then click on the left speaker icon so that it reads one sentence at a time. 13.
